With the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, the demand for medical and epidemic prevention materials has continued to increase, especially the demand for virus protection in hospitals has increased sharply. Medical protective clothing has always been an important necessity for anti-epidemic materials, which has also promoted the increasing demand for SMS non-woven fabrics for medical protective clothing. SUNTECH can provide high-quality SMS non woven machines to produce SMS non-woven fabrics that meet various protection standards.
What is SMS non woven fabric?
SMS is a tri laminate non woven fabricwhich is composed of spunbond, meltblown, and spunbond. It is made up of a top layer of spunbond polypropylene, a middle layer of meltblown polypropylene and a bottom layer of spunbond polypropylene.
How is SMS non woven fabric manufactured?
SMS spunbond nonwovens are made from a combination of two fabrics, spunbond nonwovens and meltblown nonwovens. Spunbond nonwovens occur in the bonding stage of the production process. Without the bonding step, spunbond nonwovens will not have strong strength. The main bonding processes used for nonwovens are chemical, thermal, hydroentanglement and mechanical. In the process of spunbond nonwovens, a "calendering" process is used, which is calendered by heated rolls to bond the fabric. And meltblown polypropylene process. The process was first started 75 years ago by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. The motivation for this research was the hope of collecting radioactive particles from Earth's upper atmosphere. To this end, it is necessary to produce fibers for microdenier filters. In the early 1970s, the first equipment was completed for the production of microdenier fabrics, fabricating fabrics from polymers using a single integrated process. Today's process begins with thermoplastic chips being melted and then extruded. Polypropylene is by far the most widely used polymer in meltblown technology. The extrudate is then continuously filtered and metered to produce filaments. The filament is drawn to a finer diameter using high velocity air and ensures thickening of the filament and better random layup. While SMS can be produced off-line by laminating layers of spunbond and meltblown webs, multi-denier spinning allows combining spunbond and meltblown materials into one nonwoven web. The web is then pre-bonded and thermally bonded by calender rolls
Why combine spunbond with meltblown to make SMS?
As we know, spunbond nonwovens have many excellent properties, spunbond nonwovens have high strength and durability, but their filtering effect is not ideal. Meltblown, on the other hand, has relatively weak tensile properties, but has excellent filtration and barrier properties due to the smaller fibers that occupy a larger surface area. Therefore, compounding them can make up for the weak points between the two, give full play to the characteristics of the two, and make the fabric have barrier properties while maintaining the strength and durability of the non-woven fabric. Therefore, SMS can well meet the production needs of medical protective clothing.
What are the applications for SMS?
Filtration - This is a major market for SMS nonwovens, including for surgical masks, gas and liquid filtration, and cartridge filters. The medical applications of SMS nonwovens are diverse, including surgical gowns and masks and isolation gowns
Insulation - SMS has a wide range of insulation uses, such as sound insulation in dishwashers.
Healthcare and Hygiene Products - Since SMS can be specially treated to resist alcohol, oil and blood, this makes it an excellent fabric for the medical industry. Typical uses are surgical drapes, gowns, sterile wraps, disposable patient sheets, feminine hygiene products, diapers and incontinence products.
At the same time, SMS non-woven fabrics can be composited, so different combinations of spunbond non-woven fabrics and melt-blown non-woven fabrics can be used to produce non-woven fabrics with different filtration properties, which are currently the most widely used. The ones are SMS, SMMS, SSMMS etc.
