The garment industry in India is a trillion rupiah industry. By volume, nearly 33% of its knitwear production and about 20% of its woven garment production go to export markets. Overall, about 25% of its apparel production goes to export markets, with the remaining 75% for domestic consumption.
The industry covers more than 100,000 units and employs about 6 million workers, directly and indirectly, in nearly equal proportions. The organised sector of the apparel industry accounts for about 20% of the industry and is mainly focused on exports. These are usually limited companies, while the rest are proprietary or partnership companies.
Geographically, menswear is mainly produced in western and southern India, while womenswear is mainly produced in northern India. The eastern part of India specializes in children's clothing, and in fact, these are born there.
Fiber-wise, 80% of production is cotton garments, 15% synthetic/blend garments, and the remainder silk and wool garments.
The industry produces more than 100 different types of men's, women's and children's clothing. These include coats/raincoats, suits, suits, jackets, dresses, skirts, trousers, shirts, blouses, underwear, T-shirts, sweatshirts/pullovers, baby clothing, and clothing with accessories such as shawls/scarves, handkerchiefs, gloves, and accessories.
Fabric accounts for 65% to 70% of production costs, labor accounts for 15%, and the rest is used for overhead and manufacturer profits.
